The packaging of our products is crucial to preventing food waste, guaranteeing our high-quality standards and informing our consumers. That's why we work to optimize the weight and volume of our packaging. We also lead the development and use of materials from sustainably-managed renewable resources, considering packaging and product performance requirements, and support initiatives to recycle or recover energy from used packaging. Finally, we also use recycled materials where there is an environmental benefit and it is appropriate.
By switching to a lighter, yet stronger polypropylene "tough bag" for most large pet food bags, Purina was able to save resources and improve product protection. For instance, by moving to large polypropylene woven bags for Beneful® pet food alone, we reduced packaging weight by more than 2,000 tons in 2011.
Tidy Cats® brand cat litter, in late 2013, reduced the amount of propylene in its flagship 35-pound pail by 10 percent while maintaining similar strength and compression through a new diamond design.
A new litter product made from corn cobs and cedar is our first litter to be packaged in a pressed pulp jug. Made of 93 percent recycled fiber content, the package will be totally recyclable in most curbside or community waste collection systems.
As the largest manufacturer of wet pet food in the U.S., Purina produces more than 3 billion aluminum and steel pet food cans every year. These are widely recyclable in the United States. To encourage higher can recycling rates, in 2010 and 2011 Purina's Friskies® and Fancy Feast® brands partnered with Keep America Beautiful and RecycleBank to increase consumer aluminum can recycling awareness. The effort, called Together We Can, resulted in over 90 million consumer impressions, and featured a $100,000 donation to Keep America Beautiful.
