KEEPING THE FUTURE IN MIND TODAY

Sustainability - Green Trees hero
You love your pets and you want a safe and clean environment where you can play together for years to come. And so do we. That’s why Purina is not only committed to the safety and health of our pets, but also to our planet.

When it comes to sustainable business practices, we source ingredients responsibly and continuously work to reduce our energy, water and waste from our operations. We’re also working to optimize our packaging and transport our products using highly efficient methods.

We Have Big Global Sustainability Goals for 2020 & Beyond

Sustainability - Water Reduction
Sustainability - Greenhouse gases
Sustainability - Zero Waste To Landfill

Purina believes corporate sustainability means we need to do our part to reduce our environmental impact every day. To support Nestle’s Global goals at Purina Headquarters and across our 20+ U.S. manufacturing facilities, we’re taking positive steps to be good stewards of the water we use, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and minimize waste. Here’s what we’re working toward:

WE BELIEVE QUALITY STARTS AT THE SOURCE

That’s why we thoroughly evaluate our suppliers and the ingredients they source. We ensure there’s a healthy supply of the ingredients and it’s sustainable long-term. We also verify the supplier’s environmental practices align with our standards.

WE BELIEVE OUR COMMUNITIES HAVE A RIGHT TO CLEAN AIR

That means we continually look for renewable energy sources to reduce air pollution. We use cleaner fuels and find new ways to source renewable electricity.

Forty percent of our electricity comes from renewable sources like solar and hydro power. As a result, we’ve reduced our greenhouse gas emissions by 15 percent.

WE BELIEVE OUR COMMUNITIES HAVE A RIGHT TO CLEAN WATER

That’s why we continuously promote responsible water stewardship in and around our factories. This includes improving water efficiency and effectively treating the water we discharge.

We have improved water use efficiency at our U.S. factories by more than 20 percent. Our newest factory in Hartwell, GA, has been designed with water conservancy in mind.

Our responsible water stewardship extends beyond our factories, though. We’ve funded cutting-edge, smart weather sensors for more efficient crop irrigation.

WE BELIEVE IN A CLEANER PLANET FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS

So far, 80% of Purina facilities have achieved zero waste and we are continually working to achieve our goal.

That’s why we’ve committed to send zero waste from our headquarters and factories to landfills by 2020. At our headquarters in St. Louis, we’ve introduced composting and compostable food containers and utensils to reduce waste. So far, 80% of Purina facilities have achieved zero waste and we are continually working to achieve our goal.

RECYCLE & REUSE
sustainability-how2recycle-logo
We’re committed to making 100 percent of our packaging reusable or recyclable by 2025. Several of our products are already recyclable, including our wet food canned products. These cans are made from aluminum or steel (“tin”).

Both metals are recyclable, but aluminum can be recycled endlessly, resulting in a significant decrease in waste to landfills. In fact, recycling 75% of all aluminum cans would prevent 11.8 million metric tons of CO2 emissions.

WE BELIEVE IN PARTNERING FOR A GREENER TOMORROW

	sustainability-zero-waste-green-landscape

That’s why we’ve teamed up with many organizations, including The Nature Conservancy and Ducks Unlimited, to employ and promote sustainable agricultural practices across 33.8 million acres. Through these partnerships, we’ve created apps to promote smart irrigation and together we’re working to restore flood plains and improve soil health.

CARBON NEUTRAL SHIPPING

We’re proud to partner with sustainable companies like UPS to pave the way for carbon neutral shipping for all Purina for Professionals, veterinary clinic orders and Purina.com online store orders delivered by UPS.

Our partnership with UPS has helped reduce 8,515 metric tons of CO2 emissions over the last 5 years. This is equivalent to more than 10,000 acres of U.S. forests.
